Resona Bank Group: Japan DDoS Cases 2025
On January 7, 2025, the Resona Bank Group (Resona Bank, Kansai Mirai Bank, Saitama Resona Bank, and Minato Bank) announced that its personal internet banking service "MyGate" and its smartphone app experienced connection issues, making access difficult for users.
The disruption began around 5:30 PM and was reported to have largely stabilized by 7:30 PM. The incident is suspected to be a cyberattack involving a massive influx of data from external sources, specifically a DDoS (Distributed Denial-of-Service) attack.
A DDoS attack is a method in which a large number of computers simultaneously send overwhelming amounts of data to a server or network, overloading its capacity and rendering services unavailable.
The Resona Bank Group had previously suffered a similar cyberattack on December 29, 2024, and multiple attacks were observed during the year-end and New Year period. These attacks impacted customers by making online transactions and balance inquiries difficult. However, the bank reported that no customer data breaches or malware infections were detected.
This series of cyberattacks has highlighted vulnerabilities in the cybersecurity of financial institutions. In response, Resona Bank Group is reinforcing its security measures to prevent future incidents. Specific countermeasures include:
- Enhancing system monitoring frameworks
- Implementing mechanisms to swiftly detect and block abnormal traffic
Additionally, similar DDoS attacks have been reported targeting other financial institutions and public services, indicating that high-profile organizations are being deliberately targeted.
With the Osaka-Kansai Expo set to begin on April 13, 2025, concerns are growing over an increased risk of cyberattacks. The Cabinet Cyber Security Center (NISC) has issued warnings and urged organizations to take countermeasures against DDoS attacks.
Users are advised to:
- Regularly check official websites and app notifications for updates
- Stay cautious of suspicious emails and links
- Strengthen their personal cybersecurity awareness
If affected by an attack, users should immediately report the incident to their financial institution or relevant authorities to ensure proper response measures are taken.
